Modelling - History of model making
The hobby of model making usually involves recreating real objects such as vehicles and buildings as accurately as possible. The history of model making began in the 20th century with the introduction of true-to-scale toy trains. The Märklin company launched the first model railway on the market in 1891. It had a clockwork drive and was relatively expensive. The first model cars were available a few years later and could even roll independently using a steam boiler, movable crank, flywheel and wheels. Initially, the model cars did not look like their big role models, but this changed very quickly when car manufacturers discovered model cars as an advertising medium. André Citroen was the first to have small copies of his car models made by the toy manufacturer Fernand Migault from 1922. Other car manufacturers soon followed his example.
The detailed reproduction of vehicles and buildings quickly became a trend that was followed with great enthusiasm by more and more adults in particular. Model making thus became a generally recognised leisure activity for adults.
When plastic began its triumphant advance in the 1950s, this material was also used in the manufacture of toys and, of course, in model making. This allowed models to become increasingly realistic and detailed and the hobby of model making was on the upswing, with many model making manufacturers able to look back on an interesting and eventful history. You will therefore find a lot of information about the history of most manufacturers and their product range on the respective category pages.
Modelling - a great hobby for parents & children
Modelling is a great hobby for parents and children to spend time together and develop many important skills. The world of model making is so diverse that everyone, whether beginner or professional, has the opportunity to give free rein to their creativity. Assembling vehicles such as cars, lorries, ships and aeroplanes promotes manual skills. Painting or varnishing as well as creating small worlds in the form of a diorama stimulates the imagination and encourages creativity.
By working precisely with different materials and tools, the modelling hobby promotes fine motor skills and concentration. Parents can show children how to use tools, but children can also gain valuable experience themselves by trying things out and experimenting. Children can concentrate on one thing at a time, with model making appearing to be the antithesis of the fast-paced and entertaining world of computer games.
