In the 1950s, the Lockheed L-1649 was the epitome of innovation and elegance. In 1957, the "Super Star" joined the Lufthansa fleet and for the first time became the most exclusive mode of travel in the Senator class. The main focus of the service was the connection to New York, non-stop across the North Atlantic. With its four piston engines, it closed the chapter of the classic propeller aircraft. These flights, which lasted up to 17 hours, took off from Hamburg, where the maintenance base was also located. The roll-out of the restored D-ALAN therefore took place on 20 January 2025 at a location of equal importance to Lufthansa and Lufthansa Technik. It was also given a new cabin there, which is based on the style of the 1950s. The seats come from an earlier Lufthansa A340, have been lavishly remodelled and upholstered in wine-red leather. The carpet and curtains are also based on historical patterns. After the roll-out, however, it was again dismantled into larger segments and transported to Münster/Osnabrück Airport by heavy goods vehicle. There, the original Lufthansa livery from the so-called parabolic phase was recreated. The Super Star finally arrived in Frankfurt in October. Together with the legendary Junkers Ju 52 D-AQUI, it will be the main attraction of the Lufthansa Group's new conference and visitor centre from spring 2026, just in time for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the first Lufthansa.
