Description
The public torture of captured enemies at the stake was a traditional ritual. The torture stake was a pole used by some Indian tribes in the northeastern United States to which captured enemies of the tribe were tied and then subjected to a humiliating to fatal ordeal.
The procedure was not necessarily fatal; the aim was to break the will of the captive. The victim, on the other hand, often also mocked his tormentors and appeared as unimpressed as possible by the torment.
Gravure Romund.
