Description
Louis I, Count of Flanders, son of Count Louis of Nevers (eldest son Count Robert III of Flanders) succeeds his grandfather as Count of Flanders in 1322 and his father as Count of Nevers and Rethel. He finds it difficult to hold his own against the freedom movement in the Flanders towns, but with French help is victorious against the towns at Cassel in 1328, but has to flee from Jacob Arteveldte to the French court in 1339 and does not return to Flanders. Married to a daughter of the King of France. Louis I, Count of Flanders, does not survive the Battle of Crecy in 1346.
