In the colonies, colonial troops had been formed since 1891 from volunteers of the navy and the army as well as Africans. The officer corps and the majority of the non-commissioned officer corps were German. The African enlisted men and non-commissioned officers - the Askari - were from Somalia, Sudan or the indigenous population. (The Kaiserliche Schutztruppen in German South-West Africa consisted exclusively of Germans). During the First World War (1914-1918), the colonial troops in East Africa under Major General Paul v. Lettow-Vorberg (1870-1964) reached a strength of 3000 Germans and 12 000 Askaris with 49 guns and 96 MG. Avoiding a major battle, they fought a stubborn small-scale war against the Entente troops until the end of the war. The relatively short chapter of German colonial history ended with the division of the German colonies among the victorious powers.
