Nearly a whole century antique Rome and the north-african city Carthago fought for the hegemony in the mediterranian in the three Punic wars (264-146). In ancient opinion they battled for world domination! After the Romans defeated the Carthaginians in the first punic war (264-241), conquered Sicily and broke the Punic maritime supremacy. In the second Punic war (218-201) both cities fought for the property of the Iberian peninsula. This is the most famous war, because of Hannibals crossing the Alps with war-elephants and the threat of Rome itself. The armies batlled for several years in Italy, but Hannibal lacked sufficient support and had to set sail for Africa. After the lost second Punic war Carthago was destroyed step by step. It disappeared totally after the third Punic war from history.
