In the Summer of 1942 the situation on the Stalingrad front was extremely desperate, the city was on the verge of being abandoned to the German troops, with a threatened shutdown of the tank factory. The manufacturing was moved to other factories and the production started at the Uralmashzavod (UZTM) plant by October 1, 1942. Since the plant's capacity was not enough to increase the output of cast turrets, an alternative solution was found : stamping of turrets with a 10,000t press. In October 1942 the serial production of stamped turrets started. These new turrets were called "sand molds" because of their rounded form. UZTM continued to make the stamped turrets until March 1944, and according to the plant report, 2050 turrets were shipped.
