The troops of Antony and Cleopatra were superior in numbers, not least because of the powerful Egyptian fleet. But Octavian's brilliant general Agrippa managed to cut off their supply route. On 2 September 31 BC, the decisive battle took place. The victory at Actium enabled Octavian, who soon called himself Augustus, to build an empire that lasted for almost 500 years.
