This volume recounts the memories of two members of the German army during the Second World War whose war service was closely tied to the African continent.
Konrad Jeschke was born in 1920 and joined the Pioneer Replacement Battalion 24 in 1940. For a long time, he was a commanding officer-driver in the Pioneer Armoured Battalion 200, with which he served in Africa for two years. This was followed by service in Italy and finally a posting to war college, from which he graduated as a lieutenant. He saw the end of the war in Norway as a recruit instructor.
Konrad Schäfer was born in 1922 and joined Artillerie-Ersatz-Abteilung 178 in 1941. In December 1942, he was deployed in Grenadier Regiment 168 in Russia, and from April 1944, he fought in Italy as part of Grenadier Regiment 992. On 10 November 1944, he was taken prisoner of war by the Allies for three years, which he spent in Africa.
