The assassination of the Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand in 1914 was to be the trigger of an unprecedented "world conflagration" that went down in the history books as the First World War. Militarily, the Dual Monarchy was only inadequately equipped for this war. Soon after the start of the war and the heavy losses that followed, a glaring shortage of rifles became noticeable.
In order to make up for the material losses of the field army and to be able to arm newly formed formations in an up-to-date manner, the army command had to increasingly resort to foreign weapons. In addition to the rifle stocks confiscated from extensive export orders from domestic arms factories, aid supplies from the German and Turkish confederates as well as numerous captured rifle materials were also used.
This book attempts to document in words and pictures the multitude of "foreign" rifle models used in Austria-Hungary 1914-1918.
For this purpose, the author was able to draw on the extensive files of the War Archives, on service regulations, contemporary pictorial material as well as real pieces from private collections.
