Fugger and Welser were among the most important trading houses of the 16th century - a time in which new perspectives opened up for European long-distance trade through the expansion of the Portuguese into Asia and the Spanish conquests in America. On the basis of newly discovered sources, Mark Häberlein systematically presents the role of the Fuggers and Welsers as global players for the first time and thus opens a new chapter in the history of globalisation at the beginning of the modern era.
As early as 1505, both trading houses participated in a Portuguese voyage to India. Even more important was the role of the Augsburg trading houses as suppliers and brokers of global goods: they provided copper and silver for the European Asian trade, marketed Asian spices in Europe, participated in the development of the sugar plantation economy in the Atlantic region, traded in American pearls and Indian diamonds and supplied mercury to Mexican silver mines.
