In 1838, the frigate "Regina" of the navy of the Kingdom of Sardinia undertook a circumnavigation of the world by order of the Sardinian King Charles Albert, with several objectives: to promote the "image" of the Kingdom of Savoy, to carry out scientific research and to take the new Sardinian consuls destined for Chile and Peru to their places.
On board the ship was also the 22-year-old Prince Eugenio Emanuele di Savoia-Carignano, who at the time held the rank of ship's captain first class. However, the Queen was unable to complete the cruise and had to return home after a very long stopover in the Brazilian port of Rio de Janeiro. Historians who have studied the history of the Savoy Navy have always attributed the interruption of the cruise to the "severe damage" the ship had suffered during a heavy storm that caught her north of the Falkland Islands...
