The 300 SLR was based on a sportscar developed for the year 1955. Rudolf Uhlenhaut, head of the testing department at Mercedes-Benz, set a body of a coupe on that car and used it for his daily journey to work. With the maximum speed of roughly 290 km/h the 300 SLR was the fastest vehicle with road licence in the '50s.
