Ascension of the Napoleonic Army at the Great St. Bernhardt

In May 1800 Napoléon Bonaparte crossed the Alps with his army. The arduous journey took the soldiers over snow-covered passes near the Great St. Bernard and the army reached the Po Valley at the end of May.
This dramatic scene is depicted mainly with groups of figures: for example, soldiers pulling cannon barrels tied to hollowed-out tree trunks uphill, cavalrymen leading their horses by the reins over the pass. Peasants from the Valais with mules heavily loaded with cannon wheels or ammunition boxes on their way up. Napoleon Bonaparte on a mule leads the soldiers. Very vivid depiction, engraving: Lecke.
