The course of American naval history was not determined solely by those relatively few famous ships whose stories have been told and retold time and again. This volume shines a spotlight on 50 lesser-known vesselseach significant in its own wayranging from the Continental Navy to the first supercarriers; in doing so, it also touches upon numerous other ships with which their stories are intertwined. Attention is focused not only on the structural and conceptual innovations these ships embodied but also on their crews, whose hard work and heroism gave them lifeand, at times, dubious fame. One captain even attempted to sell his warship in the midst of the Civil War. Each ship is presented in detail and chronologically in chapters that often dispel long-standing misconceptions. Some were trailblazers; others were misguided in their conception, construction, or executionindeed, two of them were not even seaworthy, and one was extinguished merely by the rain. Nevertheless, every single one contributed to shaping America's maritime history.
