German civil aviation during the Second World War was heavily influenced by politics and the war economy. With the outbreak of war in 1939, civil aviation was officially almost completely shut down as resources were diverted to the military. Lufthansa and manufacturers such as Junkers served the Wehrmacht with transport and logistics tasks. However, despite material shortages, air raids and international isolation, civil aviation continued to operate, albeit on a limited basis.
