The Airbus A400M is a particularly powerful military transport aircraft and is now in service with seven NATO countries. Compared to its predecessors, the aircraft has a significantly higher payload, greater transport volume, higher speed and range, and represents an enormous increase in capability for the air forces that operate it, including in the strategic domain. The modern shoulder-wing aircraft has all the capabilities required for military transport today, including air-to-air refuelling, and is also designed for operation from unpaved runways.
