Steep fire guns were developed to hit targets not directly in the field of view. In order to achieve this and to be able to shoot over obstacles, they had to be fired at a steep angle. Among the best-known and heaviest steep-fire guns in Germany were the "Dicke Berta" and the mortar "Karl". They were primarily used against enemy fortresses as "concrete crackers". In this volume, Gerhard Taube tells how this type of weapon developed. He describes in detail the prehistory and production history of the heavy Kolosse as well as their use in the two world wars.
