A mixture of aircraft, land vehicle and ship, hovercraft float contactlessly over all surfaces and are thus versatile. The first viable designs were created in the 1950s for passenger use and they are still in use around the world today. They range from small one-man units to the almost 600-tonne monsters of the Russian "Pomornik" class. The special form of ekranoplane (ground effect vehicle) is also comprehensively examined: Their largest representatives were giants capable of speeds of up to 500 km/h and powered by multiple jet engines.
