Ferns are widespread all over the world. With the exception of a few light-loving species, they occur almost exclusively in shady and damp places in the forest, in wall cracks, rock crevices and ravines, on stream banks or similar. Ferns have their main distribution in the tropics. For example, the largest fern plants, the tree ferns, are found in the tropical rainforest.
