Growing up in the GDR as a convinced socialist, after a successful career in the People's Navy, Hendrik Born was appointed the youngest admiral by Erich Honecker in 1988, appointed chief of the People's Navy by the Modrow government one year later and taken over by the De Maizière government. At first he struggled to maintain the navy, but on 2 October 1990 he had to have the service flag taken down. But he also had a varied and successful career in the western economic system. A contemporary witness account that could hardly be more exciting.
