These ships (eight of which were commissioned), designed for service in the colonies, had a long and often eventful career in the French Navy, ranging from 1931 (the oldest) to the late 1950s (the last). Henri Landais devoted more than twenty years of research to them, presenting his work in two very detailed volumes that represent a unique body of work. The first volume covers the avisos Bougainville, Dumont d'Urville, Savorgnan de Brazza and D'Entrecasteaux.
