From 2021 to early 2022, as the war in Ukraine was being prepared, the French army was already working on the defence of Europe's eastern flank. Romania, a former World War I ally and NATO member, was the focus of the French General Staff's attention. The genesis of this process is romanticised here by Julien Monange..
He shifts the purely geopolitical and military problem towards a new kind of literary and philosophical recollection and allows the time of conflict to enter into dialogue with the somewhat faded seductions of Bucharest, the last windings of the vast Danube and the abandoned shores of Constanta, the remains of the power of the Eastern Roman Empire. Neither pure narrative nor an escape from the present, "România" sees itself as a poetics of action.
