Civil War Union Army Officer. When the Civil war began he was serving as Sheriff of Erie County, Pennsylvania. He helped recruit what was to become the 83rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and was commissioned it's Colonel and commander on July 24, 1861. He led the unit through the Spring 1862 Peninsular Campaign until he was killed in action at the June 27, 1862 Battle of Gaines' Mill.
