Development of the Panzerkampfwagen III medium tank began in the mid-1930s with the aim of making it the backbone of the Wehrmacht's armoured units. It was a key player in the Blitzkrieg and the early phases of the Second World War. Over time, it adopted a more effective main armament system in its various versions. From the 37 mm of the first production series, it was equipped with guns that reached up to 75 mm calibre, allowing it to fight superior armoured vehicles. During the war, its armour was also improved and it was often fitted with additional protective devices to increase its resistance in combat. From 1943 onwards, however, the technological gap between the Panzer III and enemy armoured vehicles widened, leading to its gradual replacement by more modern and heavily armed vehicles.
