The Fiat 131 Abarth was based on the Fiat two-door saloon. The elaboration of Abarth included many measures such as reducing the weight of the body, creating larger wheel arches and realising air intakes on the bonnet and side panels to optimise the cooling of the mechanics. The Fiat 131 Abarth used a 4-cylinder in-line engine installed at the front as a longitudinal engine with an alloy cylinder head with 4 valves per cylinder. It was built from 1976 and competed in the World Rally Championship, winning three Manufacturers' World Championships, an FIA Drivers' Cup and a Drivers' World Championship. It competed internationally until 1982, when it was replaced by Lancia-branded cars. Some liveries showing the sponsors of the time have become icons in the history of off-road racing.
