The "Char de Bataille" B1 was the main armoured vehicle used by the French army during the Second World War. The original project was conceived in the mid-1920s (many technical solutions such as the large open tracks are typical of this period), but it was not until the mid-1930s that it began to be delivered to units. Robust and massive, it was improved in its "bis" version to increase its performance and operational efficiency. It was equipped with a 47 mm gun in a turret and a 75 mm howitzer mounted in a casemate at the front of the tank. Although overall a good tank for the time, the Char B1 was used in support of infantry divisions rather than in autonomous armoured groups, which would have allowed greater operational flexibility against the German armoured divisions during the 1940 French campaign.
