The Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was developed in the 1950s and was one of the most famous and popular light attack aircraft in aviation history. Its small and compact size made it extremely manoeuvrable and ideal for use on aircraft carriers. It featured a simple design with the characteristic low delta wings and small side air intakes, but was extremely functional for operational use. Using the Pratt & Whitney J52 turbojet engine, the Skyhawk was able to reach 1,170 km/h. Armed with two 20 mm cannons, it could carry a lethal attack load consisting of air-to-air missiles, air-to-surface missiles, rockets and free-falling bombs. Because of its operational characteristics, A-4 was a considerable commercial success. In addition to the United States, it was also used in Australia, New Zealand, Kuwait and Israel, among other countries.
