In 1955 70 years ago the Caravelle, built by the French manufacturer Sud Aviation, took off on its maiden flight. It was one of the first jet-powered commercial aircraft for short and medium-haul flights. The rear-mounted engine arrangement was a new innovation at the time a concept that would later be widely copied. In commemoration of this anniversary, Herpa is offering a small series in one-off, limited editions at a scale of 1:500. The first was a Caravelle in the colors of Finnair (item no. 538510). Ten years after the maiden flight, LTU, also founded in 1955, received its first Caravelle from the Finnish airline. The aircraft, dubbed the "Nordrhein-Westfalen," simultaneously ushered in the jet age for the Düsseldorf-based leisure airline. A total of seven Caravelles were to be operated until 1979. This limited-edition model appears in the original livery, which they were introduced into the fleet in 1965.
