At the end of the steam locomotive era in the Federal Republic of Germany, there was an economic boom that delayed the end of steam engines in scheduled service for several years. From 1970 onwards, the Federal Republic of Germany experienced a rapid upswing, during which full employment was even achieved at times. This economic boom resulted in increased transport services, so that the DB's ambitious goal of doing without steam locomotives from 1973 onwards was no longer feasible.
On the contrary: steam traction experienced a renaissance, which reached its peak with the oil price crisis of 1973/74 and the associated recommissioning of coal-fired steam locomotives.
