Sophie Holle - a 17-year-old widow - escapes marriage to an unloved man by fleeing her parents' home and finds employment as a cook. There she meets the non-commissioned officer Holle from the "Prince Louis" regiment, who is on leave. He suddenly received the regimental order to leave for Jena the next day.
The marriage was quickly arranged by the preacher in the presence of the brigade auditor - and a position as a sutler was "available" for Holle.
