Under the command of General Séré de Rivières, from 1874 onwards, captains of the pioneer troops, architects and engineers were commissioned to design and build numerous forts. More than 400 structures line more than 1000 kilometres of French border territory. Built between 1872 and 1914, these fortifications document the gradual transition from the last stone and earth fortifications to concrete and steel fortifications.
