In this book, the authors trace the development of the troop reconnaissance of the 8th Motorised Rifle Division of the NVA of the GDR, illustrated by the example of the Reconnaissance Battalion 8 and the Reconnaissance Company of the Mot.In the beginning, the troop reconnaissance units only had bicycles and motorbikes as well as rifles, but by the end they had modern armoured personnel carriers and armoured infantry fighting vehicles capable of swimming as well as technology for acoustic and electronic reconnaissance.
The troop reconnaissance units were often referred to as the eyes and ears of the troop commander. They always had to ascertain the necessary up-to-date and comprehensive information about the military opponent facing them in a possible engagement as well as the terrain conditions in the line of action. This was to enable the commander to always make the appropriate decision for the planning, organisation and conduct of the battle. Appropriate reconnaissance results were the prerequisite for achieving the greatest success with comparatively minimal expenditure of forces and means. For this reason, reconnaissance was the most important way of securing the battle.
