The Jaguar 1 rocket-propelled tank destroyer was converted on the basis of the obsolete Raketenjagdpanzer 2. This concept study had already been envisaged in 1964/65, but it was not until 1978-82 that 316 old Raketenjagdpanzer 2 tanks were actually converted. A new weapon system was installed with the HOT system, which offered various advantages and could be automatically reloaded quickly thanks to a drum magazine with eight missiles. A further twelve missiles can be stored inside the vehicle. Furthermore, the fighting compartment was fitted with additional armour, which stands out due to its striking screw fittings. Tracked skirts were also introduced for this rocket-propelled tank destroyer. Until the KWS in the years 1993-1995, the Jaguar 1 was not capable of night fighting - then it was given the strikingly large viewing head in the centre front, which contained a thermal imaging device in addition to day optics and a goniometer. 157 of the vehicles received this combat upgrade. The Jaguar 1 with thermal imaging device is 6.61 metres long, 3.12 metres wide and 2.55 metres high. With a deep wading shaft, it can cross water up to 1.8m, has a trench-crossing capability of 2m and a climbing capability of 80cm. The combat weight is 25.5 tonnes, which the 29.9-litre MTU engine with 500 hp can accelerate to a maximum of 70 km/h. Jaguar 1s were in service with the Austrian army from 1996 to 2006.
