The 3rd US Army, which was deployed by the Allies as a decoy before Operation Overlord, was to make history in the liberation of France - not least thanks to its hot-tempered "boss", General George S. Patton. The 3rd US Army was involved in exploiting the breakthrough in Normandy and towards Paris, but then reached its limits on the Moselle and in the Metz area, where it only made further progress after massive efforts and under the most difficult conditions. The American 3rd Army embodied "mechanised cavalry" with tactics that combined speed and power, and fought its way to the borders of Czechoslovakia. But apart from the legend created by Patton's personality, the unit also became one of the best-known of the US armies of the Second World War, and not only because of its track record: after the Lorraine campaign, it was the 4th Armoured Division that stormed into Bastogne to help the American troops who had been put under pressure there by Operation "Wacht am Rheim". In this richly illustrated book, the reader will find the whole story of the 3rd US Army.
