An ensign is a formation of a Landsknecht regiment. Each Fähnlein consisted of several Rotten.
As a unit, the Fähnlein comprised around 400 Landsknechts. At the head was the captain. A rotte consisted of eight to twelve lansquenets or six double mercenaries; the rotte was led by a Rottmeister. -Wikipedia-
