Bavarian and Wurttembergian infantry, Napoleon: Retreat from Moscow 1812

1812. retreat from Russia.
Contingents from all the allied and subjugated German states stood under Napoleon's banners in the Russian campaign and were swept into the catastrophe of the great army. They were mostly loyal soldiers of the Emperor, albeit with less enthusiasm, but were often treated condescendingly by the French. "When the rations were distributed, we had to fight for every loaf of bread, every pound of meat. In this respect, the French treated us like little boys. On the battlefield it was a different matter, where Napoleon's orders had to be carried out...", remarks a Württemberg lieutenant.
Among the soldiers of the Bavarian regiments who came from Tyrol, however, the number of deserters was particularly high; the suppression of the Tyrolean uprising under Andreas Hofer (1809) had not been forgotten. During the retreat, they practically disbanded. Later, after Napoleon's heavy defeats in the wars of liberation, these states switched to the allies' camp.

The Battle of the Berezina is the name given to the fighting during the retreat of Napoleon's Grande Armée from the troops of Tsar Alexander I across the Berezina (now Belarusian Bjaresina) from 26 to 28 November 1812.
This battle was the last in the Russian campaign of 1812 before the withdrawal of the French army across the Niemen on 14 December 1812.
