In the summer of 1940, with their backs against the wall, the British were urgently seeking ways to fight back against the Germans who had occupied Europe. The Special Operations Executive was established to operate as a secret army capable of sending agents to Europe to fight behind enemy lines. Their tasks included espionage, sabotage and reconnaissance. They also played a key role in establishing resistance networks in the occupied countries particularly in France in preparation for D-Day. Due to the location of their headquarters, they became known as the Baker Street Irregulars and attracted recruits from the professional classes, including lawyers, bankers, secretaries and even housewives. Another rich source was the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry.
