Drawn by Charles Lyall, 1894. Start of a series of uniform depictions of the armies at Waterloo 1815, drawn by Charles James Lyall, one of the classic English uniform artists at the beginning of the 20th century. Lyall compiled numerous series of the British, Indian and the various European armies and eras. His works can be found in major uniform collections such as the Anne S. K. Brown Collection, USA. In this work, created in 1894, the appearance of the British Army is depicted on 75 plates with all the branches of arms and important regiments that took part in this famous battle at Waterloo in 1815. Each unit is covered on one or more plates and with the various ranks. The staff and the special troops are not missing either.
The plates are annotated by the two editors, Markus Gärtner and Markus Stein, according to the current research in this field of uniform studies.
An introduction on the uniforms of the different troop units, a detailed and further compilation on literature complete this volume. Further volumes will follow on the Dutch-Belgian deployments, the Royal German Legion and the Brunswick Corps, as well as the French and Prussian armies.
