Here at last is a second edition of the commemorative work published by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Heereskunde in 1999, which has been out of print for some years. This book not only covers practically all the field grey uniforms but also, in dealing with the individual formations, presents an overall picture of the German Army during the First World War. This subject is particularly interesting as the field grey uniform marked the end of the long evolution of the hitherto brightly coloured army uniform and ushered in the age of 'camouflage dress'. The first part of the book comprises detailed descriptions and illustrations of each individual item of uniform along with all the alterations that became necessary, largely due to the shortage of raw materials during the war. This covers a spectrum ranging from headgear, trousers and overcoats, through every type of insignia, to personal equipment such as knapsacks, gas masks and riding equipment. Special sections are also devoted to specific items of dress for mountain and snowshoe formations as well as tropical uniforms. The second part is divided into the various branches of service and covers, in detail, the uniform of each individual formation and administrative body within the army. Here, the insignia for each item of uniform is dealt with in relation to the history of the relevant formation to give the full picture. The countless wartime formations, including reserves, Landwehr and Landsturm are covered along with many special technical formations such as mortar companies and anti-aircraft or 'Starkstrom' formations, which were awarded special insignia. The special clothing introduced for aviators and drivers is also dealt with in detail and a large section of the book is solely devoted to military administrators, explaining their complex organisation and dress, clearly and in depth, with the help of numerous tables. This volume also has a newly added third part, in which contemporary photographs illustrate exactly how the items of uniform were actually worn. These are all photographs from one of the most extensive private collections of its kind, which have never before been published and which present authentic documentation over the entire spectrum of the field grey uniform. The systematic layout of this book makes it the ideal reference book and an enduring standard work on the field grey uniforms of the German Army in the First World War.
