Description
In over 1600 photos, the history of the soldiers and their aircraft of Niedermendig airfield is documented from 1945 until its closure. Their missions at home and abroad, in natural disasters or on UN missions in Kurdish aid or in Iraq, right up to civilian assistance when large components can only be brought onto high buildings by helicopter, reflect a multi-layered picture of this unit, whose history is exciting, often humorous and sometimes tragic.
"With the takeover of the airfield from the French army in 1957, Niedermendig airfield became the "cradle of army pilots". Leo Schmitt, as the author of the book now available, after having already compiled a chronicle of the airfield's history from 1938 to 1945, has now illuminated the development from 1945 to its closure in 2007" (Hans Peter Ammel, local mayor). "Already with his first chronicle, dedicated to the years 1939-1945, he gave the region an important testimony of the times. The present sequel follows on seamlessly from this and impressively documents the moving and exciting development steps up to the more recent past. This new work shows that Leo Schmitt approached this challenging task with care, diligence, respect and heart and soul" (Jörg Lempertz, Mayor of the Mendig Municipality".
