Tamiya
TAMIYA is a world-renowned brand in the field of model building. In addition to particularly detailed plastic model kits, TAMIYA produces and sells high-quality RC models under the brand slogan \"First in Quality Around the World\" (own spelling). The company is the Japanese market leader for remote-controlled electric vehicles.
The headquarters of the traditional company are located in Shizuoka (Japan). In Germany, the products are distributed by the Simba Dickie Group.
In the 1950s, more and more plastic model kits from abroad entered the Japanese market, so that the turnover from the sales of TAMIYA wooden models steadily declined. TAMIYA therefore entered the plastic model market in 1959. The first plastic model was a replica of the famous Japanese battleship Yamato, built in the 1930s for the Imperial Japanese Navy.
TAMIYA was unable to offer the model at competitive prices, however: Sourcing the necessary injection moulds in Japan was too expensive.
The company finally managed to raise much-needed capital to buy new injection moulds due to the great commercial success of a small racing car produced with used injection moulds.
The choice of the new model fell on the replica of the German battle tank Panther due to the many straight surfaces favourable for mould making. This model was produced in 1:35 scale, as the model should be suitable for the use of a small electric motor with gearbox as well as the required batteries. The kit, in contrast to other kits produced by competitors, was distinguished by its easy-to-understand and clear assembly instructions, which greatly simplified assembly, and the model became a great success.
TAMIYA eventually established its own mould production facility in 1964 to solve the problem of expensive external procurement, which was beset by delivery problems.
With the introduction of slot cars in 1968, the packaging design changed fundamentally. Whereas up until then the packaging usually depicted complete scenes with the respective model, the models were now shown standing alone on a white background.
This type of depiction became a TAMIYA style element.
The TAMIYA model kits are characterised by an extreme attention to detail. In contrast to the models of other competitors, TAMIYA, for example, depicted screws and nuts very early on in a true-to-life hexagonal form, whereas other manufacturers merely depicted these screws and nuts by means of simple elevations.
It seems that TAMIYA was and continues to be a role model for manufacturers such as Trumpeter in terms of attention to detail.
The very extensive product range includes plastic model kits of cars, motorbikes, military vehicles, military figures, aircraft and ships.
Car modelling and plastic modelling are inextricably linked. In the TAMIYA range you will find classic models such as the Porsche 934 \"Jägermeister\", current vehicles such as the Porsche Carrera GT as well as cult vehicles such as the Honda S600.
