Description
Beginning with the earliest installations of steam engines in ships of the line, the book traces the technological revolution that saw the introduction of iron hulls, armour plates, shell-firing guns and the eventual abandonment of sail as auxiliary propulsion.
As with all his work, Friedman is at pains to explain why and how and when these advances were made, placing British ship designs firmly in the wider context of international rivalries, domestic political and economic pressures. The result is a nuanced and insightful overview of the Royal Navy's battle fleet in the second half of the 19th century. It is also well illustrated, an extensive gallery of photographs with detailed descriptions is accompanied by specially commissioned plans of the important classes of 'A. D. Baker III'.
