Description
At the beginning of the war, the Foot Artillery raised a large number of wartime formations: These included the reserve foot artillery regiments and Landwehr foot artillery battalions, which initially remained in the forts as siege artillery, but later moved into the field. The siege artillery also included numerous park battalions and companies. They were responsible for creating parks for guns, artillery and ammunition during sieges and in the war of position. In the course of the war, numerous artillery workshops were established for the repair of damaged gun material.
Batteries for the heaviest flat and steep fire were also part of the special war formations of the foot artillery. To strengthen the flat fire, heavy 15 cm cannon batteries were built, whose gun barrels came from the navy. For heavy steep fire, so-called short naval gun batteries with 42 cm guns (gamma device) and heavy coastal mortar batteries with 30.5 cm guns (beta device) were set up. Separate steam plough and power train parks had to be established to transport all the heavy guns. Further sections deal with the troops standing at home, such as replacement battalions, Landsturm battalions, fortress and garrison batteries. For these formations, all the essential data on their organisation, especially on their formation, disbandment or reorganisation, are clearly laid out. In addition, the frequently changing subordinations make it possible to follow the path of each unit in detail.
