On 29 October 1988, an era came to an end in Germany: freight steam locomotive 50 3559 pulled the last scheduled steam train on standard-gauge tracks, thus ending a 153-year era. It is no coincidence that this historic train made its last run under the aegis of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Rather, the German steam horses experienced their last great flowering in the GDR. In this book by Wolfgang Fiegenbaum and Burkhard Wollny, the irretrievably bygone steam railway atmosphere comes alive once again.
