Questions that many railway enthusiasts and model railway enthusiasts ask again and again and to which Wolfgang Diener gives an answer in this book. The first part is dedicated to the painting of German locomotives from 1871 until today. An attempt is made to reconstruct and document the authentic colouring on the basis of official regulations and contemporary original vehicles and models. The second part of the book deals with the designation of the locomotives, i.e. the plates and inscriptions that are typical for German locomotives. Many of these plates and inscriptions are reproduced in a uniform form on the basis of reconstructed drawings. Numerous pictures show the development of the colouring and lettering of German locomotives for the various state railways as well as the national railways, so that the chronological sequence of the remarkable changes becomes apparent.
