The Short Stirling was the first heavy four-engine bomber used by the British Royal Air Force for its night-time bombing raids on German cities during the Second World War. Its first mission of this kind took place in February 1941. Unsustainable losses of this type of bomber ultimately led to the Short Stirling being withdrawn from its primary role. Modernised versions were eventually used as transport aircraft for airborne troops, tow planes for cargo gliders or for special operations. Containing a wealth of eyewitness accounts, this volume provides an overview of the deployment of the Short Stirling four-engine bomber in the Second World War.
