Air forces occupied a central position in Cold War military planning on both sides of the Iron Curtain. The Central European states in particular felt compelled to organise their air defences on a supranational level in the alliances due to a possible nuclear threat from the air. The GDR, situated at the interface of the rival blocs, was affected by this in a very special way.
The author describes the integration of the East German air forces into the air defence system of the Warsaw Pact and at the same time analyses to what extent the political and military leadership of the GDR had its own leeway in shaping the alliance air defence on its territory and to what extent it was externally determined by Soviet guidelines. Volume 18 of the series "Military History of the GDR" published by the Military Historical Research Office.
