Between 1864 and 1870, Paraguay, under its paranoid Marshal-President Lopez, waged a war against Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay that ultimately cost the lives of 60% of Paraguay's population. The author is concerned with a comprehensive and as objective as possible analysis of the course of the war and the psychological mechanisms that made the people fight against all reason almost to the point of self-extinction.
