The Japanese invasion and expulsion from the Papua region was a six-month campaign. From July to September 1942, after landing at Buna, the Japanese advanced along the Kokoda Trail (or Track) towards Port Moresby. They were initially fought by Australian militias and later by Australian veterans of the North African campaign. In September, a Japanese operation to support the advance in Milne Bay was repelled. By November, the Japanese had been pushed back to their starting point, where American troops joined the Australians to destroy the Japanese bridgehead at Buna after a two-month siege. Using detailed maps, illustrations and historical images, historian Peter Williams examines the strategies and tactics of both sides, as well as the constraints imposed on the armies by the terrain, disease and weather. He also discusses the difficulties of the American-Australian alliance, both at the leadership level and on the battlefield. Together with Guadalcanal, the Papua campaign marked the end of the Japanese advance in the Pacific and the beginning of the Allied counteroffensive.
